Francis of Delirium
, AKA 22-year old, Luxembourg based Jana Bahrich is the loudest voice in a
very quiet country.
From recording and self producing 3 EPs brimming with alt-rock angst and lockdown nihilism in “a
basement next to the washing machine”, Francis of Delirium is on the precipice of releasing her
highly anticipated debut album
‘Lighthouse’
on 22nd March via
Dalliance Recordings
. With
fans at the likes of
Pitchfork, Stereogum, KEXP, Clash, Line of Best Fit
and many more,
Jana has taken up the mantle as the sound of Gen-Z Luxembourg, she’s putting the tiny country on
the musical map and giving a huge shot in the arm to a
fl
edgling scene even younger than she is.
As the child of two Canadian international teachers, Jana spent a large part of her youth on the
move. Born in Antwerp then moving to Switzerland, she entered her teens in the vibrant arts hub of
Vancouver, Canada before making one more move to... Luxembourg. Initially devastated at the
prospect of the change, Jana has become a de
fi
ant champion of the small country,
fi
nding
connections and relationships which have shaped her singular sound. Luxembourg might not quite
have the reputation as a creative epicentre, but with artists like Francis of Delirium, the little country
looks set to produce some big musical moments.
“20 years ago there were almost no venues in the country at all. The music scene here is very young. There aren’t really
any labels, managers or booking agents based here. Growing up there was no youth culture in Luxembourg, it’s a place
where young people leave once they’re able. Any bands that did come out of Luxembourg would have to go and gig in
Belgium and France, but now it feels like something is starting to change and a real music scene is starting to take
shape.”
Jana’s incredible journey up until this point has seen her release 3 critically acclaimed EPs,
‘All
Change’
,
‘Wading'
and
‘The Funhouse'
. Co-produced at home with family friend Chris
Hewitt, who happened to live in Seattle in the 90s, the EPs
fi
zz with raw alt-rock excitement, angst
and grunge darkness. With the announcement of debut album ‘
Lighthouse’
, the sound of the
project is shifting to embrace a more vulnerable and open sonic palette, weaving in elements of pop
alongside rock to create Gen-Z anthems which resonate universally and celebrate the beautiful
things of the world. With previous singles
‘Real Love’
and
‘First Touch’
produced by
Catherine Marks
(Wolf Alice, Boygenius) and the rest of the album self produced alongside
Chris,
‘Lighthouse’
has all the makings of a future classic indie rock record.
Offering some words on the inspiration behind the album, Jana says:
FrancisofDelirium_Biography 2024.pdf
“For this album, hope is the prevailing feeling I'm left with after making it and listening to it. The idea is that there is
this light guiding you out into a space where you can be more open and accepting of love and joy. Even as you gain or
lose love, it never really goes away; it just transforms itself, moving into other relationships with you.”
The announcement of
‘Lighthouse’
comes following a busy year of touring with the likes of
Soccer Mommy, Briston Maroney, Horsegirl
, a massive 32 day US-wide tour with
The
Districts
and hitting
Eurosonic, Iceland Airwaves
and
Treefort Fest
, as well as opening for
The 1975
and
Kings of Leon
. 2024 live dates in support of the album are below:
